Chicago has become a bona fide craft beer hotspot.  Thanks to pioneers like Goose Island, a slew of emerging and upstart micro breweries, such as Half Acre, Finch’s and Revolution, have joined the local scene over the past few years.   Not surprisingly, Chicagoans have quickly caught on to the better beer movement, acquiring a hearty appetite for quality, niche, small-batch beer.  Good thing Chicago happens to be home of the Siebel Institute of Technology, the world’s leading school for professional beer brewing, and the first ever Cicerone “beer expert” certification program to bolster the artform.  Besides expertise, guess what else makes great tasting beer?  Clean water.  After all, beer is 90% water.  For this reason, twenty local and national breweries have teamed up with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) to launch a new campaign, “Brewers for Clean Water.”  Simply put, breweries are calling for clean water safeguards for better beer.  “Whether brewers are creating ales, pilsners, porters, wits, or stouts, one ingredient must go into every batch: clean water,” said NRDC Water Program Senior Policy Analyst Karen Hobbs. “Craft brewers need clean water to make great beer. This campaign is all about amplifying their voices in support of the most important protection for their most important ingredient, the Clean Water Act.”  Check out what some local small-batch brewers have to add in the video below.

In recent years, several attempts have tried to roll back Clean Water Act protections.  This is not only bad news for beloved brews, but also for public health and many other industries.   Beyond wanting clean, reliable water for their products, craft brewers want healthy neighbors and communities.  Find out which brewers have taken NRDC’s “Clean Water Pledge” to show their commitment to clean water and sustainable operations at “Brewers for Clean Water.”

Earth-Day-Beer-Tasting-InvitationOn Earth Day 2013, NRDC’s organized a clean-water-loving Craft Beer Tasting at Galleria Marchetti featuring some of Chicagoland’s finest brews along with good food, good music, and good company.   We enjoyed pints from Finch’s, Flossmoor Station, Goose Island, Half Acre, Revolution, and Wild Onion, along with amazing Wild Ophelia chocolates from Vosges and music by the band Gemini Club.  She photos from the event below.
