Here’s a hodge-podge of websites, blogs and forums of local groups I tend to turn to for good eco-information…

 

Backyard Nature Center:  learn more about interacting with nature in New Trier Township, including outdoor play options, healthy backyard ideas and education/stewardship opportunities

 

Chicago Center for Green Technology:  this green design educational center offers seminars, guided and self-guided tours, and a resource center

 

Chicago Botanic Garden:  this website offers ideas to enjoy CBG’s natural wonderland, resources for gardening, eco-classes for youth & adults, and more

 

The Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency (DSIRE):  find out if you can save money by going green… DSIRE lists financial incentives in Illinois for efficiency and renewable energy… also, for purchasing a fuel efficient car after 2010, you can possibly save up to $11,500 with an Illinois rebate and federal tax incentives

 

Ecohousewalk:  check out this Winnetka Energy Star home and local resource listing… also see the  Glencoe Green Home and Evanston Revelle home

 

Environmental Law & Policy Center:  this environmental advocacy organization will help you stay apprised of Midwest issues through their website, blogs, and events

 

Faith in Place: find out how to make your place of worship greener, this group has partnered with over 800 congregations in Illinois

 

Green Drinks: monthly “think globally, drink locally”  forums in Evanston and Chicago (Foresight Design Initiative) present speakers on a wide range of eco-issues and offer a great networking opportunity

 

Friends of Ryerson Woods & Smith Nature Symposium:  this Deerfield Nature Preserve hosts great events, including nature walks, art/photo exhibits, American environmental literature book chats, and interesting presentations

 

Go Green Wilmette & Going Green Matters: this active group is dedicated to raising environmental awareness and helping residents take action, and the website provides green tips and promotes a variety of eco-events worth checking out

 

The Green Chicago Restaurant Coalition: find a guaranteed green restaurant in Chicago

 

League of Conservation Voters: track how your federal elected officials are voting on environmental issues, see where they rank on annual scorecards, and hold them accountable

 

Little Bits of Green: this great blog provides Chicagoans with healthy, earth-friendly resources in a fresh and simple way

 

The Local Beet – Chicago: find regional CSA’s and farms, nearby farmers market, local food at stores and restaurants, and a lot more

 

Make It Better: Green Living: this North Shore Magazine often features articles on green living

 

Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) – Midwest Office: this environmental advocacy organization will keep you informed of local (and national) issues through their website, Switchboard blog, and events

 

Safer Pest Control Project: learn about safer solutions in Illinois for pest control problems, including natural lawn care, integrated pest management in your home and children’s school, and much more

 

Sierra Club – Illinois: this environmental advocacy organization will help keep you current on local (and national) issues through their events, outings, website and blog

 

Sprout Chicago: this cool blog presents an urban guide to a green life

 

Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC): find out where to recycle nearly anything in the Green Pages and ideas to greening your children’s school

 

US Green Building Council – Illinois: check out resources for residential green building, healthy and green schools, and maps of Illinois LEED certified projects
